Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy is a wide-ranging review om modern spectroscopic techniques such as X-ray, photoelectron, optical and laser spectroscopy, and radiofrequency and microwave techniques. The Fourth Edition also provides the reader with an update on laser cooling and trapping, Bose-Einstein condensation, ultra-fast spectroscopy, high-power laser/matter interaction, satellite-based astronomy and spectroscopic aspects of laser medicine. Important references are updated till 2003.

About the Author

Sune Svanberg is a professor of physics and head of the Atomic Physics Division of the Lund Institute of Technology. He is also the director of the multi-disciplinary Lund Laser Centre at the Lund University. He has extensive research experience in radiofrequency, optical and laser spectroscopy, and in the use of lasers in combustion diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and medical diagnostics and treatment, and is thus in good position to cover the vast scope of the book. Sune Svanberg has coauthored almost 500 papers and trained a large number or undergraduates and graduates in basic and applied atomic and molecular spectroscopy. He served extensively in international organisations and scientific advisory committees. He is a member of five academies and holds three honorary doctor degrees.

About the Author
Perumal Murugan is a well-known contemporary Tamil writer and poet. He was written six novels, four collections of short stories and four anthologies of poetry. Two of his novels have been translated into English to wide acclaim: Seasons of the Palm, which was shortlisted for the prestigious Kiriyama Award in 2005, and Current Show. He has received awards from the Tamil Nadu government as well as from Katha Books.

Aniruddhan Vasudevan is a performer, writer, translator and activist based in Chennai. He has written for the New Indian Express, Media Voice and Kalachuvadu. He also documents various public health projects and art projects, and is involved in LGBT advocacy work. He is currently a graduate student in anthropology at the University of Texas, Austin, and is also working on his first novel.

Vivid, Hardy-esque account of Gounder life 100 years ago

This moving account of the dilemma faced by a childless Gounder couple a hundred years ago not only depicts a warmly loving relationship between the two, but also describes how their marriage is put to a test when the wife attends the fourteenth day of the Ardhanareeshwara festival in Tiruchingode, in hopes of begetting a child. The author has brought to life the daily work of a farm household--he has used every detail in Ponna and Kali's life together, from the blooming portia tree in his father-in-law's front yard, to the cleanliness and order of Kali's barnyard, to Muthu's ability to find unusual hideaways, to give each character an intense individuality. This is truly a work that can be compared to that of Hardy, in its vivid descriptions of nature and local life. Sadly, the author, like Hardy, is being forced to give up writing, not only his novels and short stories, but also his poetry--because this work has been grossly misrepresented to the public in his state.

Very nuanced, with great detail about the lives of a couple happy in themselves but coping with external pressure to have a baby. Set in rural Tamil Nadu, the roles and lives of the people from close family to extended relatives, friends and the larger community are sketched with care. The translation is simple and yet the landscape is heavy with dilemmas, reflection, and the inevitable nature of time moving on. The couple are in love, they have a sexy, flirtatious and sensuous love life but the presence of the guilt-inducing mother in law, the suggestions from outsiders for the husband to take a second wife, and finally to adopt a child keep shattering their mundane everyday lives. Through it all, the couple attempts to appease the gods by performing sacrifices, feeding holy men, eating special diets and performing pilgrimages. Prescriptions come from neighbours, family, friends and well-wishers. The frustration and sorrow of not conceiving is presented delicately, yet matter-of-factly, drawn with such frankness that the reader keeps hoping for something good to happen. At no point does the author offer a solution or a judgement.

How did people deal with infertility before modern treatments were developed? One solution is to adopt - but for some people it is a public admission of failure. Thus, in Swiss/German cities that celebrate pre-Lent carnivals, on one day everyone got drunk and could go off somewhere with a stranger and take one's chance at conceiving. In south India there is a temple of "Ardha Nareeswara" (Half Woman, half man), and on the last day of the temple festival a similar atmosphere of wild abandon existed, and childless women could sneak off with someone other than their husbands and try their luck. This is a last resort preceded by all sorts of deep emotion. Perumal Murugan gives a moving account of one such couple.
40 years ago Kannada movie director Girish Karnad produced "Vamsavruksha" which dealt with a similar story. Then people were sympathetic. Greg Reese (Dayton, OH) has performed scientific programming and algorithm development in industry and research laboratories for 20 years and has written in C++ for the last 10 years. He has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and extensive experience in digital image processing, human vision, and pattern recognition. He has worked on software for several NASA projects, written three general-purpose image processing suites, created a commercial molecular-biology program for the PC, and is also the co-author of an industry-wide, medical, electronic-data standard.

One of the best amongst 2nd tier C++/STL books

This volume is definitely worth a read or two, if you want to open your eyes to a variety of applications of STL containers and algorithms. For people already into the practice and way of using STL on a regular basis, it gives you reinforcement and validation that you did good and right in your previous work. Even if you are good already, you may still learn a trick or two here and there through the pages. One of the things I wasn't aware is that a member function must be a const one (calling it won't change the state of the object) if used with a binder (bind1st or bind2nd).

IMHO, the set of books in the "C++ In Depth" series, edited by Bjarne Stroustrup and published by Addison-Wesley, belong to the first tier, high quality, and highly intellectual. A number of others in the "Professional Computing" series under the aegis of Brian Kernighan, such those by Scott Meyers, belong to the 1st tier, too. There are surely others as well.

One characteristic of the 1st tier works is that they don't spell out all the gory details; they stop short, rightfully, at elaborating on too practical side of things. That is where books such as this particular one come in to fill the void. In terms of quality and content of writing, they may be (and in many cases, in fact) not as rigorous as those in the 1st tier, but they help you see things about which beans are spilled. BTW, an example of 1st tier books about STL in particular is certainly Josuttis' "The C++ Standard Library: A Tutorial and Reference."

The C++ Standard Library is a series of routines that comes with the official version of the language. They are well written, carefully defined routines that accomplish many tasks that turn out to be common to many programs. The routines in the library are efficient enough that they are probably better than the average programmer can write. They are reasonably convenient and safe. Unfortunately, clarity, consistency, and ease of use were not part of the design goals.

Eventually he opens up to her – and she finds herself warming up to him.

Everyone else at the rehab center raves about how wonderful Ryan is and for a time Amy almost sees it. Their friendship and budding romance remind her that she’s still alive. But when Ryan puts the brakes on her efforts to return to her former glory, it’s a betrayal Amy just can’t forgive.

She’ll get over him eventually…won’t she?

Great story

I really liked this story. Amy ticked me off a lot but the relationship seemed realistic and the way she dealt with her situation seemed real too. I really liked that.
Ryan was so patient and even when Amy was a complete brat to him, he kept trying.

I wanted the dialog to be a little deeper but I really enjoyed the story line and seeing Amy learn to actually live her life despite what happened to her.

Really great book

I read Claudia's book "Love is Blind", and enjoyed it so much that I bought this one. I like this one even more. Amy is a strong heroine who has to overcome huge emotional and physical obstacles. Ryan is sweet, sensitive and sexy. His love for Amy was inspirational. Very good book :)
