For some time I had sensed, with the collapse of the 'second world,' that the old way of dividing the countries of the world into 'three worlds,' was becoming more irrelevant with each passing year. I did experiment with other typologies and systems of classification but found them to be unsatisfactory. What I especially like about McCormick's 'different way of seeing the world' is that he derives his six arenas of countries from differences in political (Freedom House rankings), economic (Economic Freedom Index rankings), and social (HDI rankings) variables. About the Author
John McCormick is Jean Monnet Professor of European Union Politics at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). He was educated at Rhodes University (South Africa), the University of London, and Indiana University, and has been a visiting professor at Exeter University and the University of Sussex in Britain, and at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium. He has lived in, traveled to, or undertaken research in nearly 40 countries in North and Central America, Europe, Southeast Africa, and Southeast Asia. Before completing his Ph.D. in political science, he worked in the public sector for two environmental interest groups and was a consultant for a number of specialized agencies of the United Nations, including FAO and the UN Environment Program. His teaching and research interests lie in comparative politics and public policy, with particular interests in environmental policy, British politics, and the politics of the European Union. His other publications include EUROPEAN UNION POLITICS (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011), EUROPEANISM (Oxford University Press, 2010), and CONTEMPORARY BRITAIN (Palgrave Macmillan, 2nd edition, 2006).

In a nutshell

Western-centric as all getup. I'm not someone who buys a lot of postmodern BS but this textbook is absurdly Western in outlook and tone. I'm sure a point-by-point elaboration could be done but it is incredible. Okay textbook, but very biased.

About the Author
Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob’s love for teaching mathematics was nourished for nearly 30 years at Miami Dade College, where he received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College and an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. In addition to his Developmental Algebra Series, Bob has written textbooks covering college algebra, algebra and trigonometry, precalculus, and liberal arts mathematics, all published by Pearson Education. When not secluded in his Northern California writer’s cabin, Bob can be found hiking the beaches and trails of Point Reyes National Seashore, and tending to the chores required by his beloved entourage of horses, chickens, and irritable roosters.

Would give it a ten if I could

I have to confess to a certain degree of academic snobbery when it comes to books on science and math. That is, I tend to look for books produced by PhDs in a specific field who teach at prestigious universities or for collaborations of them. I do, however, pride myself on giving credit where credit is due, and this volume is certainly an example. According to the text's introduction Robert Blitzer, the author of Introductory Algebra for College Students, has a BA in math and psychology with a minor in English literature, an MA in math, and a doctorate in behavioral sciences and teaches in a local community college in Florida. That's quite an eclectic vita. In this case it is an ideal vita, that of a teacher dedicated to student comprehension of his subject.
The author approaches student learning from a variety of directions, some uniquely oriented to specific types of mental framework. He presents, for instance, visual guides for those who need to "see it to understand it"-my particular favorites are the sets that compose all real numbers on p. 19 [3rd ed.] and the graphs of systems of linear inequalities like those on pp 312-313, because they make these topics so crystal clear. Elsewhere he introduces the concept of matrices, putting information into columns under appropriate headings so that one can see what information one has, what one needs and what has to be manipulated with what to achieve an answer (i.e. "Solving a Solution Mixture Problem," p. 173.) Remember those threatening word problems involving things like that Greyhound bus and the car approaching one another, or the two planes traveling in opposite directions? Piece of cake. The author also gives instructions for scientific and graphic calculators for those who are especially in tune with technology-I have yet to try this, because for my money it's a whole different learning parameter in itself. He also puts some of the algebraic expressions into a useable context. The student finds equations in economics, health sciences, physics, population demographics, athletics, nutrition, sociology, politics, in short most of the areas of student interest and student majors. More than anything, Blitzer makes math useable, accessible, and relevant. It's not just a subject we have to pass to take the classes we really want, it's a skill that helps us with decision making in everyday life.
Some of the data the author uses to create his equations come from industry, education, census data, the cinema industry, simple everyday problems like fencing a yard or deciding on the respective values of a large size or two medium sized pizzas! These situations provide some unique educational experience, not simply because they allow the student to understand the underlying mathematical concepts of solving a specific problem. They are themselves very instructive in reality. What does it matter if two cans of peaches that cost the same are shaped differently ( i.e. if one is six inches in diameter and five inches in height while the other is 5 inches in diameter and 6 inches in height are they really the same value?) How fast does the cost of an education climb over time (i.e. will you be able to afford it for yourself? your kids? Should one get involved in the politics of education?) What is the difference between the rate of increase in salaries for those without high school educations vis a vis those with high school diplomas and those with four years of college (i.e. you may be making the same as a drop out at the beginning, but where will your income be relative to theirs in five years? In ten? In 15? Are you really to busy to get more education? Is that math class really too difficult to get through a degree?) One gains some very important insights into real life just by doing the math that underlines the decisions life presents the average person.
As with any textbook in math, however, the student is an important part of the learning process. If you only do the assigned problems, or if you skip the cumulative reviews at the end of each chapter because you've "already learned all that," you may have perfect daily work but fail your exams. There is, after all, a difference between getting an answer correct, especially with the help of the book, and getting the underlying concept so that you can apply it in new situations.
I think this text would be a wonderful way for adults who are math shy by virtue of unpleasant early experiences to get more out of the subject. It would certainly give parents, whose math skills are poor or just covered with dust, to help their children with this discipline. It would also help college algebra students to prime themselves for more advanced math or for taking a college level algebra course that uses a more confusing text.

This book was perfect for my Beginning Algebra class. It explains things very well. I feel like I understand it much better now then when I was in high school. It's a different way then I was taught. Wish I had this book in high school because I wouldn't need to be taking Beginning Algebra now!

Have found that Amazon has the best price on text books, new or used, far lower than the local College book store. They arrive with in the week and are in good shape. Returning them is easy too with the reminders from Amazon at end of semester and on line return labels, just try and remember to keep the box they came in.

One caution though, it you are needing a study guide or on line materials that come with new books and have an access codes to use those materials, be advised that once the access code is used once (with the new text book) it can not be used again with the then used text book. Amazon was not real clear on this when we started ordering used text books, best to also order and pay for a new user guide & access code if you will need it with the used text book. Need also to consider ordering new text book with usable access code depending on what may be least expensive.

About the Author
William Guy Carr, R.D. Commander R.C.N. (R) Retired was born June 2, 1895 and died October 2, 1959.

At the early age of twelve the author was thoroughly indoctrinated into the Bolshevik ideology by two revolutionary missionaries who travelled on the same ship with him out to the Orient in 1907. Unlike many others he didn't swallow the bait they offered him "Hook, Line, and Sinker." He decided to keep an open mind, and to investigate matters thoroughly, before reaching any conclusions. His investigations and studies of all angles of the International Conspiracy have taken him to nearly every country in the world.

Commander Carr had a distinguished naval career. During World War I he served as Navigating Officer of H.M. Submarines. In World War II he was Naval Control Officer for the St. Lawrence; then Staff Officer Operations at Shelbourne, N.S.; then Senior Naval Officer at Goose Bay, Labrador. As an Officer on the staff of Commodore Reginald Brock he organized the 7th Victory Loan for the twenty-two Royal Canadian Naval Training Divisions.

Maybe the Most Important Book Ever Written

This may be one of the most important books ever written. It should be required reading in all schools (if there's ever to be a chance of straightening out our mess of a society that is). That won't happen though, not with America's system of public education in the hands of the Rockefeller Group. That's one point Commander Carr didn't catch. It's also one of the few.
Pawns in the Game is the culmination of a lifetime of research. If understood it shakes the beliefs of most readers to their core. The amount of documentation Carr found is staggering. The occasions where he produces it are the times when it's absolutely necessary to make what he says believable. Communism was created and funded by American bankers. Members of the same group were Roosevelt's advisors during World War II. Carr produces enough evidence to make it believable. Hitler tried to form an alliance with Britain in order to hunt down financiers from that same group. He didn't want to fight England. It makes sense. England and Germany were never natural enemies. Germany was the first nation to recover from the great depression. That's well known. Carr explains why. Hitler broke away from the International Bankers and enacted a system of monetary reform. Austria (Hitler's home Province) had enacted a similar system in the years that followed World War I. It was successful until the Rothschilds raised trade sanctions against them. Hitler's actions provoked the bankers to the point where they initiated war against him. Carr produces solid evidence when he states these cases. Much of what he has to say contradicts most of what we spend our lives being taught. But, when placed alongside historical events most of us know about what he says makes sense. The events we knew about end up making more sense as well.
This is only a small part of the book though. Carr traced the history of the money lenders from their beginnings through to the formation of the Illuminati by Adam Weishaupt. He also traced the House of Rothschild from their beginnings as the head of the group of Goldsmiths that financed the English Revolution. He explains their involvement in almost every facet of our history. He explains how these things were funded, and by who. He gives detailed analysis of their methods. The book isn't perfect. Often, he traces lines of involvement rather than chronological history (which results in moving from era to era and then back again in the next chapter). There are times when his guess work is obvious. But these are minor complaints. When a reader finishes the book they understand not only what's happened in the past, but also to see how those same things are being initiated now. This is just a small part of what this book covers. When a person is through it they don't see a conspiracy. They see a money trail.
This work should never be out of print. As a guide through the past it's astonishing. As a guide toward the future and how to influence its shape, it's invaluable. It's inaccurate to refer to this book as something one "finishes". Anyone with an appetite for truth never finishes with it. There's too much truth in there to keep from going back to it again and again.

Compared to other, more current, books I have read this book provides more information in fewer pages. It also had footnotes and references to most (if not all) the source information and even a glossary.

I agree that this book is the best intro to the Globalist conspiracy that I have read so far. Even though there are many more current books, this one provided many answers to questions regarding the period from the time of Christ to to near the author's death in 1959. Once you have read this book, the more current books like those by Col. Donn de Grand Pre (2 new ones coming out in Sept. 05) will be easier to absorb.

I only found a few points that I would question on accuracy; but considering the amount of information provided that would seem to be expected, and I continue to find the "anti-semetic" label inaccurate. Carr is anti-Zionist and anti-Globalist, and he also makes the point that only a small number of Jews and Gentiles are part of the "New World Order" or Illuminati.

He is describing the most ruthless of international organized criminals who have murdered regardless of race, religion, or political party; so we all need to oppose it while we still can. The CFR appointments, the Federal Reserve System, the United Nations, the corrupt lobbyists, the Rothschild Empire, the thriving illegal drug trade, the assassinations of Presidents, the no-bid government contracts, the funding of both sides of wars, and the use of "terrorism" to destroy soverign democratic counties is history not theory, but it is certainly conspiracy, and this is the tip of the iceburg.

Buy it before it is too late

I have read many books concerning the supposed global financial conspiracy and I consider this to be one of the most cogent and well-researched. I agree that the author has been, and will continue to be, labelled anti-semitic. That is logically equal to calling someone anti-Italian because the accuse the mafia of having Italian members. The author does offer clear explanations that a small group of very powerful and rich men who may have a large number of members who are considered Jewish in their ranks. It makes perfect sense, without any need for conjecture as to the motives of the author. I believe the purpose of the book is to expose the reader to the reality of the world in which they live. It does conform with many Biblical teachings and prophecies, without being preachy. It is informative and any clean thinker will find this book enlightening. In short, buy it and learn or do not buy it and remain fooled. Make the right choice.

Another masterpiece by Kuzneski

I have just finished The Einstein Pursuit, and once again I'm already wanting another novel straight away, I have read all of Chris' books, boy does this guy know how to write. TEP is another Payne and Jones Story and once again Kuzneski has managed to keep it fresh and Original, great characters, great story and the thing I love the most about Chris is the amount of time he puts into his research for each novel. I learn so much I didn't know before about our history thorough his books. For me 10/10 review and I'm just waiting for the Payne and jones movie to come out :)

I'm a Kuzneski fan and this is just another fine addition to the Payne/Jones series

Well what can I say? I'm a Kuzneski fan and this is just another fine addition to the Payne/Jones series. Admittedly, these books are a guilty pleasure but like with eating you should have a varied and balanced diet. That said, there are times when you deserve to sit down and have a pizza or a greasy cheeseburger. I think Chris' books are certainly more nutritious than that but they are also not great art. His two main characters are fun and entertaining and his supporting characters are well developed and add to the fullness of the story. If you are looking for a fast paced, quick reading thriller then you need look no further.

It was pure luck that I had ddiscovered Chris Kuzneski on one of my regular book browsing hours at a leading bookstore chain. Wedged in a haphazard way was ‘The Prophecy’ and being the order freak, when it comes to books, I had to put it back in place :P {Yeah I Know…!!} But the cover caught my eye and I knew I just had to get it after I read the blurb. Looking back, I really owe it to my obsessive behaviour that I discovered this author. But it is by choice that since then I have read four other ‘Pyne & Jones’ mystery and it was a happy day when I received a free copy of the latest – thanks to Hachette India.

A secret science lab in Stockholm is mysteriously burnt down, killing everyone in it. When it is clear that the fire was deliberate, Nick Dial of Interpol takes over the investgation. On the other hand, Payne and Jones are brought into the case by Mattias Sahlberg when he approaches them for help. It is soon clear that the danger to Sahlberg’s life is somehow connected with the incident in Stockholm, but Payne and Jones can only connect the dots when they can save Sahlberg’s life. But there is a lot more than meets the eye… Why was the lab such a secret that nobody seems to know what they were working on? What is the history behing the Einstein Club and how does it influence these two cases? And most importantly who is behind the massacre in Stockholm and why does he want Stalhberg dead too?

As Chris Kuzneski takes us on a globetrotting journey, it is impossible not to get glued to the book in the very first chapter. The star of the novel is of course its leads – Jonathan Payne and David Jones or the PJ Team as I like to call them ;) They are ex-commandos who are well settled in their civilian lives after retirement. Or maybe not so well settled since they keep finding themselves in all sorts of trouble. But together they are an effective team and a force to reckon with. Equal part brains and brash, these two guys take on trouble head-on. This latest novel in the series continues with maintaining the standard of mystery and action that PJ Team has been offering in every single book. Fast paced and full of action, this book is a complete page turner as we try to find out the secrets behind the mysteries put up to us. The villain means business and is a character that makes things hard for Payne and Jones and more thrilling for us readers.

In the 1970s Joe Haldeman approached more than a dozen different publishers before he finally found one interested in The Forever War. The book went on to win both the Hugo and Nebula Awards, although a large chunk of the story had been cut out before it saw publication. Now Haldeman and Avon Books have released the definitive version of The Forever War, published for the first time as Haldeman originally intended. The book tells the timeless story of war, in this case a conflict between humanity and the alien Taurans. Humans first bumped heads with the Taurans when we began using collapsars to travel the stars. Although the collapsars provide nearly instantaneous travel across vast distances, the relativistic speeds associated with the process means that time passes slower for those aboard ship. For William Mandella, a physics student drafted as a soldier, that means more than 27 years will have passed between his first encounter with the Taurans and his homecoming, though he himself will have aged only a year. When Mandella finds that he can't adjust to Earth after being gone so long from home, he reenlists, only to find himself shuttled endlessly from battle to battle as the centuries pass. --Craig E. I was somewhat taken aback by the style of this novel at first. After reading a few dozen pages, however, I could clearly see why this book is considered classic military science fiction. This is a fascinating contrast to Starship Troopers.
Haldeman's style is terse and effective, seasoned with a sly sense of humor throughout. The protagonist, William Mandella, is a likeable military everyman with whom a reader readily identifies. The battle scenes are particularly well done, allowing a reader to easily follow the action without the confusion that would plague a less skillful account.
The Forever War is notable for its exploration of the temporal effects of faster than light travel, i.e., Mandella's tours of duty last hundreds of years on earth, while for him, only a few years pass. Mandella goes forth to battle, having no idea what type of home will await him in the unlikely event that he survives. Eventually, Mandella is rendered a human anachronism, a veteran in command of troops he can barely understand.
The parallels with Vietnam were mostly lost on me, as I'm too young to relate, but the theme of coming home to a world one no longer recognizes is more than ably developed. Another theme that gets a lot of play is that of the unintended consequences of social engineering as Earth's society "evolves." Some of the changes to Earth that Mandella witnesses are disturbing, many are humorous, and the final chapter is extremely unusual and thought-provoking.
More than just a cold military fantasy, The Forever War has a surprising emotional impact as well. Best of all, Haldeman makes his points with subtlety and humor, not by nailing them into your skull. A terrific read that I would recommend to anyone without hesitation.

This is not the version you're looking for.

The Forever War is one of my favorite books. I've read it at least ten times over the years. However, what you're getting here is NOT the version you probably remember. It's an unedited version. Now, I'm sure you're thinking "Great! I LOVE the book, so more of it can only be a good thing. Right?"

Wrong.

It's Haldeman's terse prose and direct writing style that make The Forever War a great novel. Without the discipline and restraint that previous editors imposed upon his work, Haldeman rambles on like your great-grandpa telling you about life during the Great Depression. There are at least two entire chapters devoted to describing how Earth's economy is now based on calories instead of dollars. And by the end of those two chapters, Haldeman himself seems to conclude that it's dumb, impractical idea that's not very interesting in the first place.

There are reasons that the original cuts were made. What was once tense, quotable, action-packed and provocative is now a lumbering beast, sagged down by tons of extraneous ramblings that don't add to the story even a little.

I certainly don't expect you to believe me. And in fact, I suppose some of you might even like the extra material, bland and superflous as it is. But for me, this version is a rough draft. I would much prefer to have a copy of the edited version. Editing is NOT a dirty word- it's part of the craft of writing.

Space opera with a humanistic heart. Superb!

Haldeman originally wrote this novel as an allegory of the Vietnam war, told through the eyes of a reluctant soldier caught up in a battle that never seemed to end, while the world he left behind changed drastically. However, it applies to all wars, in any time, and the book has never lost its timeliness.
Main character William Mandella serves in the war against the mysterious Taurans, which, because of time dilation udring his spaceship travels, lasts for seven hundred years while Mandella ages only ten. Earth alters, lifestyles completely change, and Mandella wonders the purpose of the senseless warfare.
Although specifically allegorical, Haldeman's novel is powerful enough to apply to all combat. In a way, this could be seen as the opposite to Heinlein's _Starship Troopers_, with reluctant soldiers caught in purposeless combat, and a hero who is neither more skilled or heroic than any other solider around him-he has merely lasted longer than the others. The book has many great touching moments in between the furious combat scenes (a few of which are confusing), such a Mandella's separation from his love Marygay Potter, and a sad return to an Earth that has aged beyond their understanding.
A deserving classic of many awards, and I'm sure it will never age as long as warfare is still with us.

What are these girls and women doing here? They are exposed--but so are we. What are they telling us? See us and hear us, for our bodies and souls are your revelation.

Unlocking the soul

Bodies and Souls is the long-awaited publication of Frank Cordelle's The Century Project. Although numerous books present womanhood in picture and word (Laurie Toby Edison's Women En Large and Wise Women by Joyce Tenneson come to mind), Bodies and Souls is perhaps the most successful to date in giving you a strong sense of who the women (from birth to age 94 so far) are and the pain and joys they've experienced.

Each entry consists of a nude photograph of a brave female and her personal statement in the form of prose, poetry, or both. In some cases, Cordelle provides the text or supplements it with his own observations. Many of the participants share their pain and joys. You will find the insecure, the joyful (a pregnant mother stands out here), cutters, cancer survivors, rape and abuse survivors, and many others from various races and walks of life. The pictures are certainly worth more than a thousand words, and the personal statements provide important context for the scars, tears, smiles, and sometimes amusing facial expressions and body language seen therein. Some of their comments and advice for living are priceless. Cordelle has done a remarkable job of opening a window into these inspiring women's souls.

I highly recommend this book to anyone (female or male) concerned with issues of self image and body image. This should prove an invaluable resource to counselors and those struggling to regain footing after a physical or emotional trial.

The most moving photographic journey I've encountered

I went to Frank Cordelle's exhibit in my hometown with more than a touch of skepticism- a man photographing females nude? Expecting to see Playboy (and worse) I was never so grateful to be wrong. I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, rape and anorexia. What I saw in these photos brought me a sense of community among women and a decidedly human view of who and what we are. Frank shows an innate respect and understanding of these women. No pity, no pedestals and no pretense. Real females at all stages of life brave enough to show the rest of us who they are- who WE are. Sometimes sad, sometimes angry, sometimes hurt, sometimes weak,sometimes funny and sometimes strong. I have the book and have shown it to many people now. Each and every one came away from the experience with alot to think about. My 12 year old "step daughter" spent a couple of hours poring over the photos and reading about the women. She immediately "got it" that this book is about the real beauty within us all. This book is the antidote to all of the airbrushed perfectionism expected of women in our culture. If you are a woman, this is what you need to see. If you are a man, this book will give you an insight never before shown about women.

Something everyone should see and read

This project is of such importance that I can't believe it's received such a lack of publicity. Cordelle's 25 year journey has brought life to so many people, it's a shame more people haven't seen it. The fact that it's taken him so long to get this work published just goes to show how far American society has to go in terms of people being accepted as they are and feeling comfortable with who they are and what they look like and not feeling like they have to compare themselves to the images of thin people we see everyday on magazines and in the media in general.

Best book next to the Bible.

It's hard to rate this book with only 5 stars. I was raised a Mormon. After leaving the cult due to the Mormon inconsistencies and contradictions I found myself in a state of limbo. I didn't know what to believe. I knew that a God existed but wasn't sure if it was the Christian God, the many many Hindu gods or maybe some deity that was unknown and impersonal.
The Case for Christ was a critical look at Christianity from the perspective of an atheist. Lee Strobel left no stone unturned. He tackled the historicity of the person Jesus, the resurrection account, miricals and every objection to which I wanted answers.

I enjoyed reading this book

I enjoyed reading this book. Already a believer in Christ, my primary purpose for reading the book was to add to research I am doing to write a book on Christ. My purpose will be to explain the trinty of God. Jesus the person is also Jesus who is in fact God. One of the primary arguments by Muslims is that Christians believe in three gods while they worship the one true God.
I was amazed the Shroud of Turin was not included in this book since it offers amazing evidence of the Resurrection of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
However, the sources Lee Strobel does provide from his exhaustive investigation of the facts is compelling to say the least.
I recommend this book as one the best for those who have doubts, but are seeking the truth. If having the Bible present in its final form is not enough for you and you are seeking historical evidence, forensic evidence, theological evidence, medical evidence, and psychological evidence then this is the book for you.
If you just want to strengthen your own spiritual growth this book is also for you.
In either case do a search on you tube for the Shroud of Turin for the latest physical evidence along with biological and photographic evidence in The Case for Jesus. If you doubt the birth,,death, and resurrection of Jesus after doing this you do so in the face of more evidence than any other historical fact in history.

Must buy book to learn SAP BusinessObjects Lumira

Getting Started with SAP Lumira by SAP's Christian Ah-Soon and Peter Snowdon is a new SAP Press Book that is 565 pages long. This time I read the electronic version of the book, and I had the book open on a laptop while I followed along with SAP Lumira Desktop (and in some cases, SAP Lumira Cloud). You can read a sample of the book here which also includes an index.

Why should you be interested in Lumira? Forbes predicts that "Companies will invest in self-service, automation, and augmentation to answer the skills shortage" and "Storytelling will be the hot new job in analytics". These are areas that Lumira represents for SAP.

Following along in the book, I learned how to set up tracing based on the BO_trace.ini file. I also learned about How to Configure the Auto-Enrichment File in Lumira, The heart of the book, in my opinion, is the visualization. I followed along with the book using the Titantic dataset, Olympics dataset, and the SAP Price data set that I downloaded from Yahoo Finance.

I should note that the book is based on an older version of Lumira as the "explore" icon is missing. That said you can still learn from the book.

What did I learn? I can only highlight a few items here.

I liked the calculated dimensions example. I also created a custom hierarchy, following along with the book:

I also hadn't paid much attention before to the Copy to clipboard feature available in the visualization gallery; this is good to know if you want to use the visualization you created in PowerPoint.
