A Quick Road to Improvement

The 370 puzzles in this book will keep you occupied for some time and will greatly improve your play. Do yourself a favor and work through each one carefully, resorting to the solutions only if you are absolutely desperate. Most of these can be solved mentally, but in some cases the use of board and pieces will make the concepts more clear. The small pocket size format of the book makes it very good to take along and use during down-time such as waiting for doctors appointments and the like. The serious student of checkers really ought to have this book.

Fully Worth the Money Spent

Wow - what a fun book that was! This book has so many well thought out problems, that your game has to improve the first time through. I've been through this book several times now, increasing my speed (and mostly my technique) while getting as much enjoyment as the first time through. When using my newly acquired skills in real games, I've "Dazzled" more than a couple of players; having your opponent say "I didn't even see that coming" is a direct result of the insight gained reading this book. This book seemed free of errors (i.e. all problems were solvable and all problem numbers matched their corresponding solution number). I look at a checker board with a little more confidence now, and take my hat off to Robert Pike. I would recommend this book to anyone without reservation.

Travis Crosby here sheds light on an often-overlooked, but exceptionally influential politician. He argues that Chamberlain was driven primarily by a personal need for power and control -- characteristics that went beyond political loyalties. Nevertheless, his accomplishments as chief spokesman for electoral and social reform, and his achievements as Colonial Secretary, were genuine and lasting. This book sheds new light on an influential character who played an important role in the development of British politics.

MAHZARIN R. BANAJI is Richard Clarke Cabot Professor of Social Ethics in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. Banaji studies the social beliefs and preferences of adults and children with a focus on implicit or automatic cognition. She taught at Yale University for 15 years, receiving the Lex Hixon Prize for Teaching Excellence and served as the first Carol K. Pforzheimer Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. At present, Banaji also serves as Cowan Chair in Human Social Dynamics at the Santa Fe Institute. Banaji is the recipient of a J. S. Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Diener Award for Outstanding Contributions to Social Psychology. She was elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society of Experimental Psychologists, the American Academy for Arts and Science and Herbert Simon Fellow of the Association for Social and Political Psychology. Her work has been recognized with a Presidential Citation from the American Psychological Association and she served as President of the Association for Psychological Science. Banaji has published over 180 scholarly papers and most recently a book (with Anthony Greenwald), Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People.

SUSAN A. GELMAN teaches at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she is the Heinz Werner Collegiate Professor of Psychology. Gelman's research focuses on concept and language development in young children. She is the author of over 200 scholarly publications, including The Essential Child (Oxford University Press, 2003), which received the Cognitive Development Society Book Award and the Eleanor Maccoby Book Prize from the American Psychological Association. Gelman is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Association for Psychological Science, the American Psychological Association (Division 7), and the Cognitive Science Society. She has received numerous awards, including a J. S. Guggenheim Fellowship, a James McKeen Cattell Fund sabbatical fellowship, the American Psychological Association Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology in the Developmental Area, and the Developmental Psychology Mentor Award of Division 7, American Psychological Association. Gelman was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2012.

Colin Drake's New Book Is a Modern Spiritual Classic

An invisible obstacle blocks spiritual seekers when they approach non-duality. The greatest service a teacher can offer is to point out with vivid clarity and shocking directness the utter simplicity of the work they have embraced.

The seeker by definition will continue seeking. Rarely does the seeker realize that the very act of seeking instantly removes them from the possibility of enlightenment. In spite of well-intentioned advice like "be here now" the seeker plows bravely on, convinced that his or her liberation awaits.

The extraordinary gift that Colin Drake brings to the table is a unique talent for simplicity. Albert Einstein once said "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler." Einstein could have been describing Colin's new book "The Simplicity of Awakening."

Colin aptly uses the term "pointers" in the subtitle. If somebody is looking for their glasses and they've got them hanging on a chain around their neck, then they already have their eyeglasses even though they are looking for them. All you have to do is point to their eyeglasses (akin to the Zen finger pointing to the moon). If that fails -- and it usually does -- then you strive as resourcefully as you can to point out the self-evident truth that their passionate search for their glasses somewhere else than right here is the very thing that is preventing them from finding their glasses!

some hilarious animal moments

I immediately identified with romantic dare devil Kat Mason as she tries to look after her new inheritance and countless waifs and strays. There are some hilarious animal moments that will have you smiling to yourself if not laughing out loud. On the other hand I found it difficult to like playboy heartthrob Dougie Everett. Watching the relationship develop between these two was fascinating, especially when the author manages to totally change the reader’s preconceptions.
Kat’s friend, beautician Dawn is another great character. The only mud she has seen before is in a face-pack so when she visits Kat deep in the countryside, it’s a million miles away from the cruise ships she’s used to. Consequently, the reader is in for some hilarious moments.
All in all, some great characters and an ideal holiday read although from a personal point of view, the novel is on the lengthy side and removing some of the padding would make for an even better read.
