Michael J. Buckley traces the argument that informed the rise of modern atheism, finding that this unprecedented denial of God developed out of the very strategies employed to counter it.

About the Author
Buckley was director of an ccumenical and pastoral center at Wetherby, the first of its kind in Europe, from 1966 and 1977. Pope Paul VI appointed him to the VIatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, a position he held for five years, and he has continued this work through the Maranatha Community for reconciliation in Northern Ireland. He was founder of El Shaddai Inner Healing Movement in 1982. He has been Parish Priest of St. Joseph's Church, Taddcaster, Yorkshire, but is now working full-time in the healing ministry.

In an age where atheism is generally taken to be the 'default' or 'neutral' position and where the burden of proof is presumed to rest with theism, it is invigorating to read a book that treats atheism as a theory or school with its own intellectual history. Buckley's concern is not to trace atheism to its very origins but rather to explore the way in which early modern thinkers such as Descartes in their attempts to place theism on secure 'scientific' foundations unwittingly gave rise to exactly the opposite position. Buckley's study is a major achievement in the history of ideas.

Brilliant. Mandatory reading!

This is probably the most influential book I've read, and I've read quite a few. It is a trenchant bit of historical work, explaining how the question of the existence of God became translated out of theology and ultimately into physics and science. This book will rock any atheist's world.

Foucault analyzes the practices of self-examination and confession in Greco-Roman antiquity and in the first centuries of Christianity in order to highlight a radical transformation from the ancient Delphic principle of “know thyself” to the monastic precept of “confess all of your thoughts to your spiritual guide.” His aim in doing so is to retrace the genealogy of the modern subject, which is inextricably tied to the emergence of the “hermeneutics of the self”—the necessity to explore one’s own thoughts and feelings and to confess them to a spiritual director—in early Christianity. According to Foucault, since some features of this Christian hermeneutics of the subject still determine our contemporary “gnoseologic” self, then the genealogy of the modern subject is both an ethical and a political enterprise, aiming to show that the “self” is nothing but the historical correlate of a series of technologies built into our history. Thus, from Foucault’s perspective, our main problem today is not to discover what “the self” is, but to try to analyze and change these technologies in order to change its form.

About the Author
Jerry Pournelle is a reigning master of military science fiction, author of the series of novels about John Christian Falkenberg and his legion of interstellar mercenaries, and many other works, such as Janissaries, Exiles to Glory, High Justice, King David's Spaceship, Starswarm, and others. With Larry Niven he has collaborated on a string of bestselling novels, including Lucifer's Hammer, The Mote in God's Eye, Footfall, and many more. He holds advanced degrees in psychology, statistics, engineering, and political science, and has been involved professionally in all these fields. He and his wife live in Los Angeles.

Roland J. Green has worked as a full-time writer and reviewer since he sold his first novel, Wandor's Ride, in 1973. Green's most prominent works are his military action adventures of the future, including the Starcruiser Shenandoah series, the Peace Company series, and Voyage to Eneh (2003). He is the coauthor of Tran with Jerry Pournelle.

A great Trilogy, BUT...

This trilogy was originally published years ago, and the fourth book has never seen the light of day. Given that Storms Of Victory was written in 1987, I don't hold out much hope of the conclusion ever being written. That said, these are well written, fun reads and well done military S-F, Pournelle has always been a writer who could craft a good plot, with good characters that are well developed, and these books are no exception. If only he had finished the series.

Not the book I was looking for.

Firstly: NOT A NEW BOOK. First: This is another omnibus edition of the 3 previously released books. Secondly, I bought a paperback version hoping for something to read while on the bus and at home. This is the size of a hardback but with a paperback cover - so the worst of both worlds. Thanks BAEN. Those critical remarks aside, it is literally the 3 previous books back to back inside a single cover, great for someone who has never read these classics. Sadly I have, several times, and didn't need a new non-durable not easily portable copy.
