An interesting look at the German home front

This thoroughly engaging, very in-depth survey of the German fashion industry expertly weaves together not just the history of clothing design and manufacture but also the various social, political and economic forces which propelled Germany from WWI through the immediate post-WW2 era. This story particularly provides yet another example of how, despite their domestic-style sabre-rattling to keep both homeland and occupied populations in line, the Nazis again failed to bend popular taste and culture to match their warped political ideology, the principles of which were inconsistently applied and were thus generally unworkable (the cinema is another prime example, as outlined in the text of "Ministry of Illusion").

References to high-profile fashion publications such as Die Dame and Elegante Welt, and the articles and photo features/advertisements which they carried, leave me wanting for more directly from their pages, though such availability is limited to German state museum collections. But, the photos which are thankfully included in this book are alluring and tempting samples of a part of German social history which cries out for a "big picture book."

I have only two relatively minor reasons for not rating this book 5 stars---one, it could do with a little more organization in the form of subject headline breaks within each chapter, just to help summarize as one reads along; and two, more of the book titles, organization names and other items expressed entirely in German could have been translated to give more immediate depth to the material. But I can in no way criticize this work---it is fascinating, comprehensive and entertaining, and I heartily recommend it.

Fascinating

I read this work for a graduate class on totalitarianism and this was one of my favorite works. Guenther's approach to aesthetics and fashion as a way of analyzing Nazi Germany is unique and insightful. She brings to light the disparity between the rhetoric of the political leaders and the realities of the lives of the German nobility, particularly the purchasing habits of the wives and mistresses of those same leaders.

worth a read

Nazi fashion. Shows it was complex because of course women would not do as told. To my surprise, I actually felt sorry for the German women by the time she got to describing the end of the war, though the way the jews in the fashion industry were treated was of course totally in human and unconscionable. Interesting to see the details, though sad. She's a bit of a clumsy writer though the information is so fascinating. Scholarly book, not art book.

Enjoyable Glimpse into the Days Before Hand Grippers

- Why I Read This Book

I train my hands already as part of general fitness, for martial purposes, and to assist with... well... manual labor. I was curious how Jowett, a man who could clean and press an anvil with one hand, trained his grip.

- Positives

This book is filled with lots of anecdotes about strongmen at the time. The prose flows smoothly and keeps you interested: given its short length, you could easily read this book in one short session.

The exercises are a little different and kind of cool. Aside from finger pulling contests and "wrist turning" (arm wrestling), Jowett gives heavy book lifting exercises for the fingers, and broom and brick (or sledgehammer) lifting for the wrist. These are, in Ross Enamait's parlance, "low tech, high effect". He also discusses plate lifting. But most interestingly, he devotes much time to barrel lifting. Ever wonder how you can lift a barrel to your shoulder with one hand? Probably not, but now you can learn how. Barrels may not be as plentiful today, but kegs certainly are, and these exercises would delight the odd-object lifter.

- Negatives

The book is an expensive reprint for its size (only 45 pages). (As a note, you can find all of the Mighty series books free online.) There are a few typos and the pictures are of adequate but low quality.

Regretfully, Jowett does not discuss anvil-lifting in this book.

- Final Thoughts

This book is designed to entertain, motivate, and give some exercises you can do at home. It should be noted that it is not a comprehensive manual to hand training.

I enjoyed this book much more than Molding Mighty Legs.

I have the liberty of working around kegs, so when no one is looking, I will be trying some of the barrel lifting exercises - with empty kegs at first, of course!

Anybody who is we'll know for grip strength, or who has a book of their own on the matter of grip strength makes note of this book. If you want to close hand grippers in the big league then buy the book and read it several times it only takes a few minutes.

Grade 4 Up-The experiences of 15 children who survived the Holocaust in hiding are presented here within the historical context of the Nazi rise to power and World War II. These youngsters were sheltered in a variety of private homes and institutions by "righteous Gentiles," family friends, and those simply looking for additional money; some were resented, some treated compassionately, and others mistreated and abused physically. Greenfeld has interviewed these survivors, who are now living in the U.S., and has recorded their memories. Both the mundane and the unusual are remembered; the most commonly described feelings are the fear that family members would perish and the sense of guilt at having survived while others did not. There are reminiscences of narrow escapes and poignant remembered pleasures of edible treats. While the chronological arrangement of the book makes it difficult to follow a specific child's story (it is possible by using the excellent index), it succeeds admirably in allowing readers to place the experiences described within the framework of the Holocaust. An excellent selection of black-and-white photographs and an open design contribute to making this an important and accessible resource.

Gr. 5-10. "I remember all the time being told to be quiet, the Germans will get you." In order to live, Jewish children had to go into hiding from the Nazis during the Second World War. Greenfeld has spoken to survivors now living in the U.S., and he weaves pieces of their painful personal narratives with a general account of what it was like to be a Jewish child at that time. Like Anne Frank, many were hidden by Righteous Gentiles, who often risked their own lives. Like the children in Vos' Hide and Seek (1991) and Anna Is Still Here (1993), they had to lie, to be always on guard. The individual voices are intense and quiet. They speak of hunger, cold, terror, and loneliness. They remember suddenly being ashamed of themselves. Boys had to hide that they were circumcised. These children witnessed courage and also horror, such as the father who had to strangle his screaming baby to save the others in hiding. They're honest about their difficult readjustment after the war ("My mother was in such bad shape . . . she had no teethÿ20.ÿ20.ÿ20.ÿ20I couldn't stand being near her"). They will always feel guilty for having survived while others died. The slightly oversize book, printed on a fine vellum stock, is artistically designed, with clear type and wide margins, and the personal narratives are set off in italics, with occasional small black-and-white family snapshots that frame moments of ordinary life. A Moving Account

I just finished another book about the Holocaust that mentioned children being smuggled out of the Warsaw ghetto in backpacks and I wanted to hear more stories about how children survived the Holocaust.

This book is considered juvenile non-fiction but the information is the same regardless of the reader's age. Howard Greenfeld does a very good job organizing the stories of children who were hidden during the Holocaust. He includes their stories in their own words as well as photographs of the survivors.

A moving collection regardless of the reader's age.

A must read book.

I bought this book for my son, Jefferson, who is 9 years old. When I looked through it, I started reading it, and just couldn't put it down. It is a wonderful book, of hardships like we have never known before, and survival of a wonderful religion and people. We are not Jewish, but I enjoyed this book immensely, and will be reading other books by this author. This book is great for adults, really makes one appreciate all that we have in this country; freedom first and foremost. For children, it is a great book to teach about hardships and compassion for others, as well as understanding history and the second world war. A DEFINITE 5 stars from me.
