Recommended for applied statisticians

"How large should my sample be?" is a question that is often put to applied statisticians. This book is a valuable resource for answering this question. Of course there are web sites that will do the calculation, but, in my experience, they often do not give me much understanding of the theory that underpins the calculation. In this book, Ryan blends theory, practical advice, a guide to software and an overview of the research literature - he has lots of references. There are exercises for each chapter too - with answers to selected exercises. Right now I am looking for information on sample size problems for repeated measures designs: Ryan has some helpful pages on this not-so-standard topic. Also, Ryan writes well. I recommend this book to any applied or industrial statistician: it will be a good addition to your professional library. Finally, I like the size of the book (374 pages) - good for reading on the train. "Sample size determination and power" should be in every university library.

Great coverage of the topic

Great review of the topics covered. Comprehensive in that the topics are explored from several angles and the author comments on many of the considerations that come up in practice. My background is engineering, and I have taken several graduate level stats courses, but the topic of sample size always seems to get put on the back burner. I purchased the book to fill in gaps in my own understanding, and the book was perfect for that. The only improvement I would suggest is to have more examples or problems to work out at the end of the chapters. If I could give this 4.9 stars, I would. This might not be a great book for someone who is new to stats.

In this hilarious and poignant sequel to A Long Way to Chicago, Peck once again shows that country life is anything but boring. Chicago-bred Mary Alice (who has previously weathered annual week-long visits with Grandma Dowdel) has been sentenced to a year-long stay in rural Illinois with her irrepressible, rough and gruff grandmother, while Joey heads west with the Civilian Conservation Corps, and her parents struggle to get back on their feet during the 1937 recession. Each season brings new adventures to 15-year-old Mary Alice as she becomes Grandma's partner in crime, helping to carry out madcap schemes to benefit friends and avenge enemies. Around Halloween, for example, the woman, armed with wire, a railroad spike and a bucket of glue, outsmarts a gang of pranksters bent on upturning her privy. Later on, she proves just as apt at squeezing change out of the pockets of skinflints, putting prim and proper DAR ladies in their place and arranging an unlikely match between a schoolmarm and a WPA artist of nude models. Between antic capers, Peck reveals a marshmallow heart inside Grandma's rock-hard exterior and adroitly exposes the mutual, unspoken affection she shares with her granddaughter. This time, 15-year-old Mary Alice visits Grandma Dowdel alone for a one-year stay, while her parents struggle through the recession of 1937 looking for jobs and better housing. With her older brother, Joey, working out west in a government program, Mary Alice takes a turn at recounting memorable and pivotal moments of her year with Grandma. Beneath the woman's fierce independence and nonconformity, Mary Alice discovers compassion, humor, and intuition. She watches her grandmother exact the perfect revenge on a classmate who bullies her on the first day of school, and she witnesses her "shameless" tactics to solicit donations from Veteran's Day "burgoo" eaters whose contributions are given to Mrs. Abernathy's blind, paralyzed, war-veteran son. From her energetic, eccentric, but devoted Grandma, she learns not only how to cook but also how to deal honestly and fairly with people. At story's end, Mary Alice returns several years later to wed the soldier, Royce McNabb, who was her classmate during the year spent with Grandma. Again, Peck has created a delightful, insightful tale that resounds with a storyteller's wit, humor, and vivid description. Funny & interesting at any age.

My husband & I both enjoyed this book. I got it for my 10 year old grand-daughter as a gift. I started reading it and could not put it down before finnishing it in one day. It brought back many memories of my child hood and of the great depression which I grew up in. My mother kept a big pot of pinto beans cooked on the stove and a big pan of corn-bread for the hobo's that rode the rails. We got three to five a week to eat on our back steps. Being a young girl at the time, I thought it romantic to ride the rails and hear their stories. The 'Hobo's' were always respectful and were just down on their luck. I could relate to the young girl's feelings and I thought her grand-mother was a hoot! I'd love to have a grand-mother like that.

Yeah, Math!

As I already have had many courses in Mathematics at university, the content in the book is review. However, if I were a person just entering the Medical Lab Tech program with a need to get up to speed on Math, this would be a good book. It explains the problems and gives good examples and the practice problems have the answers readily at hand.

About the Author
E. L. Cussler is Distinguished Institute Professor at the University of Minnesota. The author of the text Diffusion, he has received the Colburn and Lewis Awards from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

G. D. Moggridge is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Cambridge. He has taught chemical product design since 1998, receiving the Entec Medal and Frank Morton Prize from the Institution of Chemical Engineers and a Pilkington Teaching Prize.
