Greatest Book Ever (until the 15e)

Been waiting two years for the new edition, and I can clearly say, it lives up to all the hype.
There is no doubt that this book will allow me to easily ace my AP exam.
However, I have a few small critiques.
Shirley O. Hockett and David Bock M.S. really didn't bring their creativity to the table. Big props to Dennis Donovan M.S. for both creating challenging problems and inspiring my inner calculus abilities. I could easily tell that each helpful explanation and challenging review question was created by Dennis Donovan. It no longer confuses me why they call Dennis Donovan the "shakespeare of calculus." Though Shirley Hockett and David Bock need to bring their "A" game next time, or else I might not be on my "A" game either.
Anyways, thanks for the helpful updates for the new exam format. Gonna go read it again, thanks.

I purchased 14 of these updated study guides for the high school library where I work for our students and the up coming AP Testing "season".
The new test does not include an "e" choice in the multiple choice questions and this updated study guide reflects this in the practice TEST section only which is only the back section of the book BUT it appears the editors forgot to update the practice sections (the majority of the study guide) to reflect this. "E" choices are given through the practice section which makes me think that BARRON's dropped the ball on this book and made a lazy choice of not updating the entire book. When I showed the book to the calculus teacher she was so upset that it was not "teaching" like the new test and requested I return them. This might not bother some calculus teachers but I am guessing it will bother a lot of them. So sad.....they ALL are being returned. Thank goodness Amazon has an amazing return policy!

I found myself in one of these "moods" and I stumbled upon Anything for a Lollypop so I decided to give it a try. BEST decision of the week! It grabbed me from the very first paragraph. The relationship between Cali and her adopted daddy is scorching from the start and things don't slow down until the end. Some barely legal innocence, a little domination from hunky Stewart, and it features the lollipop of my dreams. All in all, the perfect recipe for a sexy reading experience.

About the Author
James Runcie is the son of the former archbishop of Canterbury, the director of the Bath Literature Festival, and the author of four novels: The Discovery of Chocolate, The Colour of Heaven, Canvey Island, and East Fortune. He is also an award-winning filmmaker and theater director and has scripted several films for BBC. He directed a documentary following a year in the life of J. K. Rowling. I bought this after seeing the Masterpiece Mystery premiere and I was not disappointed. I found that some of the most wonderful lines spoken in the TV program came straight from the book. I do want to state clearly that the series is only a "mystery" in that Sidney involves himself in amateur detecting. So many critical reviews are about the weakness of the mystery component. This series is NOT a mystery series, it is a series about an appealing and interesting character, his struggles and contradictions, his journey in life, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. A cast of amusing characters, including his dog, Dickens, add humor and warmth. Please don't draw comparisons with other mystery writers. This is a story with mysteries, not a mystery story!

I like finding new detectives in mystery stories and the setting for this one, early 1950s, sounded pleasingly different. Our detective, as you might have surmised from the title, is Sidney Chambers, vicar of Grantchester, the quiet English village. Through the short stories in this collection, Sidney is induced to become involved in investigating several mysterious crimes. He is friendly with an inspector and his position in the church lends some authority to his actions while rendering his investigations relatively unobtrusive to the wrongdoer.

Despite the nature of the crimes (the violence of several murders and two thieveries), this is a very quiet book. This is perfect for those of us who like cozies, who don't necessarily want violence in their reading material but may not work for people who want suspense. I'll admit that there were times when it seemed too slow but I enjoyed the leisurely pace. It seems fitting for the time and place, where rationing is only finally starting to end, where televisions have yet to grace practically every household. We also get insight into Sidney's spiritual and personal life, from the way he feels about his preaching to potential wife material.

The quality of the stories varies. I really liked the story of the missing engagement ring while I found the one about the missing portrait to be quite sickening and much darker than the other stories. Although each mystery provides the framing and ostensible purpose for the story, it does not always come across as the most important element. Sidney's romantic connections and his life in the church sometimes overshadow his investigations, drawing my attention and sympathy. While each short story is self-contained, it is good to read all of them because the characters drift through, sometimes in London, sometimes in Cambridge. What we learn in the previous story provides additional color to the next.

Overall: Slower than what I had expected but not without its charms. Sidney is a fascinating character and I would definitely be interested to spend more time with him.

A vicar solves mysteries while fretting about his vocation

Sidney Chambers is an unlikely detective. As the vicar of the Church of St. Andrew and St. Mary in Grantshire, he is more comfortable hearing confessions than seeking them out, but crime seems to have a way of chasing him. The first volume in a projected series of six collectively known as "The Grantchester Mysteries," Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death is really a series of connected stories, each with its own title, rather than a typical novel. Recurring characters include Sidney's good friend Inspector Keating, his sister Jennifer, the close female friend, Amanda Kendall, with whom he dances around the topic of romance, his surly housekeeper and his pious curate. The stories are these:

"The Shadow of Death" - Shortly after Sidney presides over Stephen Staunton's funeral following Staunton's suicide in 1953, Pamela Morton takes Sidney aside and declares her belief that Staunton, with whom she had been having an affair, had been murdered. All the while wondering why he's getting involved, Chambers chats with various suspects. Along the way Chambers manages to tipple a bit of whiskey despite everyone's assumption that he would prefer sherry. This proves to be fortuitous as whiskey furnishes the first significant clue to the best mystery in the book.

"A Question of Trust" - An engagement ring presented at a New Year's Eve dinner party disappears. The mystery makes for pleasant but unexciting reading.

"First, Do No Harm" - A woman promises her mother that she will not marry while her mother is still alive. When the mother's death coincides with the woman's engagement, Sidney suspects foul play while finding time to ponder the ethics of euthanasia. There is very little mystery in this one.

"A Matter of Time" - When Sidney goes to a jazz club, a friend's sister is strangled during the drum solo. The murderer, like everyone else in these stories, turns out to be quite well mannered.

"The Lost Holbein" - A rare portrait has been stolen and replaced with a forgery. This story puts Amanda in the forefront of tracking down the wrongdoer, leaving Sidney to come to her rescue. A predictable yarn and again, not much of a mystery.

"Honourable Men" - Sidney takes a minor role in Julius Caesar. On opening night, the actor playing Caesar is actually stabbed to death. The story strives for social relevance but Sidney's attitudes, far ahead of their time, seem artificial. Despite its preposterous set-up, the story at least presents a mystery, albeit one that is easily solved.

This is a gentle, civilized book, filled with conversation and thought rather than gun battles and thrilling escapes. Sidney spends as much time fretting about being a better priest as he does solving mysteries. Perhaps a more religiously observant reader will relate to Sidney's internal struggles, but he seems like such a squeaky clean guy that I had difficulty understanding his anxiety. I agree with much of Sidney's overriding philosophy -- his respect for privacy, his belief that "we must think the best of people" -- but a pleasant state of mind does not suffice to make a character interesting.

The stories may appeal to fans of cozy mysteries; Sidney is likable and the text is free of profanity. For my taste, the stories are a bit dull. Perhaps the characters, including most of those who are supposed to be sinister, are just too nice. Instead of a police procedural we're given a clergyman procedural detailing the life of a determinedly unexciting vicar. His work, his love of jazz, and his chaste admiration of Amanda Kendall might be enough to fill his life but they do little to ward off the reader's drowsiness. More problematic is that most of the stories fail to meet the test of a good mystery; they are just too easy to solve.

James Runcie writes in a low-key style that is fluid, sometimes elegant, occasionally stuffy, and too often long-winded. He doesn't quite know when a story should end, or he feels the need to give Sidney yet another chance to sermonize. Given my admiration of Runcie's prose, I am sorry that I cannot give Sidney Chambers my wholehearted recommendation. The stories simply lack the kind of tension that a mystery should deliver, and they don't succeed as character-driven literature, although they try to be both. If I could, I would give the book 3 1/2 stars.

Great ASP.Net 2.0 E-Commerce Primer/Reference

This book covers it's topic E-Commerce very well. It also takes advantage of the new features found in ASP.Net 2.0 including some of the new ADO features. If you are getting ready to setup an E-Commerce site I highly recommend this book. I also recommend it for beginning developers wanting to know more about ADO and database design.

The authors have a great approach to design that anyone doing E-Commerce would do well to follow. Better yet they mention the pros and cons of different approaches and explain why they chose their approach. I've been thrilled to learn some new strategies to improve performance that I hadn't considered before as well as some new features in ASP.Net and ADO 2.0 that I wasn't aware of.

The only negative, for me, is the database as well as ADO basics this book spends many pages covering. However there's plenty of worthwhile content to justify the price. So if you are familiar with database design and have a working knowledge of ADO you can just skip past those pages. I do recommend you skim thru them though as, like me, you may learn some new 2.0 features you weren't aware of.

The book covered all my E-Commerce questions: catalog design, how to scale up/performance considerations, SSL, Security issues, credit card processing, and costs involved. They even point you in the direction of a few recommended credit card processing businesses. Best of all they approach the site creation in such a way you can quickly get up and going and then later on focus on fine tuning payment options and really making the site standout with features.

a v. gud asp.net 2.0 intro book

This would be the best book for introducing someone new to asp.net 2.0. The book is very practical and does it job
educating the idiot like the beginning word suggests in its title. I have notice in later chapters 8 onwards where the author refers to a control when the code is hard coded into
the aspx page. This can be confusing in a beginner book.
I felt that the authors did not do justice by giving partially completed code from chapter 12 onwards. My motivation kind of died after that since there was alot of compilation errors and so forth for a beginners book. It is hard to understand how the other reviewers where able to get the rest of the code running without going through the same problems that I am having.
Unfortunately like other programmers I don't have time to debug author's code.

A very long slog...

Being an experienced developer I like to approach a new topic at a higher level than this book offers. While this book has a lot of good detail, I find it a lot like the Microsoft Step-by-Step books. If you take the time to work every example you will spend days getting through this book. There is a lot of coding! You could cheat and use the down-loaded code to get you through the more mundane parts. It is worth the money to get all this detail but don't think this will be a walk in the park.

About the Author
Larry R. Dalton is the Founding Director of the National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center on Materials and Devices for Information Technology Research, Director of the DARPA MORPH program, and Director of two Department of Defense MURI Centers. He received the American Chemical Society Award in the Chemistry of Materials, and the IEEE/LEOS William Streifer Scientific Achievement Award. He is a Fellow of the American Chemical Society, the Materials Research Society, the Optical Society of America, the SPIE, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Peter Günter is Emeritus Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and a member of the board of Rainbow Photonics Ltd in Zürich. His main research interests include electro-optics and integrated optics, nonlinear optics, ferroelectric and polar organic materials as well as THz photonics. He has written and edited ten books on photorefractive phenomena, laser-induced dynamic gratings and organic nonlinear optics, and is a fellow of the Optical Society of America.

Mojca Jazbinsek is a member of the ETH spin-out, Rainbow Photonics AG. At Rainbow Photonics she is currently working on applied research projects on organic nonlinear optical materials for high-speed electro-optics and THz-wave generation. Her research interests include novel organic electro-optically active materials with enhanced stability and their integration into photonic circuits, and novel infrared photosensitive materials for light processing, phase conjugation, spatial and spectral beam manipulation.

O-Pil Kwon is associate professor at the Department of Molecular Science and Technology and the Department of Applied Chemistry and Biological Engineering at the Ajou University in South Korea. His research interests include organic functional materials and supramolecular ordered materials for electro-optic, terahertz wave and electronic applications.

Philip A. Sullivan is Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Montana State University. He currently pursues research toward the development of novel organic photonic materials for biophotonics applications, nonlinear optical metamaterials and structured optical nanomaterials. He has worked in the area of organic materials for photonics applications for over ten years.

Not bad.

Maunder's text may not be the "best" book on algebraic topology, but I still recommend this one to those who find other more advanced texts like Spanier rather inaccessible. Warning: the chapter on cohomology and duality is not very well-organaized (compared to other chapters), so you may want to consult Bredon's book instead.

Shouldn't be your first text in algebraic topology.

It is a decent book in algebraic topology, as a reference. At first, I found this textbook rather hard to read. Too many lemmas, theorems, etceteras. Three suggestions:
1. Needs more pictures, especially for the simplicial homology Chapter.
2. CW complexes should be covered before duality and not after.
3. Needs more examples and exercises.
Overall, the book is very good, if you have already some experience in Algebraic Topology. I found that the Croom's book "Basic concepts of Algebraic Topology" is an excellent first textbook. Too bad it is out of print, since it is very popular, every time I get it from the library, someone else recalls it. The combination of these two books probably is the right thing to have: Maunder's book picks up where Croom has left you.

A Practical Guide to Quantitative Analysis in Biological Experiments

In the first sentence this books says: 'seeing is believing but measuring is knowing.' And that's a pretty good summation of the book with is generally concerned with making quantitative measurements of biological binding reactions. It is intended to provide a resource or teaching tool that explains quantitative measurements in a manner that can easily be applied to experimental research, classroom teaching and/or understanding the work of other scientists.

Having said that, it is important to also say that this is not a book of 'cookbook' experiments for a student. Instead it is a discussion of the types of experiments that might be run, and even more important on the analysis of the data obtained so that the experimental results can be clearly understood.

A companion web site kinetics.cshl.edu goes with the book and compliments the material presented in the book. The web site also has a collection of Web-based simulations that can be manipulated to visualize important concepts presented in the chapters. They afford a better understanding of binding and rate curves and fitting data.
