Are you a Beginner who would like to learn python, in context with a specific area, and tired of using syntax focused books sans practical examples? OR
Are you exploring data science landscape and want to see practical examples of how to actually use machine learning algorithms in data science context?

If you answer in the affirmative to either of the questions above, "Python for data science for dummies" is the perfect book for you. Luca Massaron is a practicing data scientist, and a prolific author of several books including Regression Analysis with Python , Machine Learning For Dummies, Python Data Science Essentials, Regression Analysis with Python, and Large Scale Machine Learning with Python. He is also a leading Kaggle enthusiast, and you can see his 'practitioner fingerprints' all over this book; especially in later chapters about data processing, ETL, cleanup, data sources, and challenges.

This book starts with the fundamentals of Python data analysis programming, and explains the setup of Python development environment using anaconda with IPython (Jupyter notebooks). Authors start by considering the emergence of data science, outline the core competencies of a data scientist, and describe the Data Science Pipeline before taking a plunge into explaining Python’s Role in Data Science and introducing Python’s Capabilities and Wonders.

Once you get your bearings about the IDE setup, chapter 4 focuses on Basic Python before you get your Hands Dirty with Data. What I like about this manuscript is that the writing keeps it real. Instead of giving made up examples, authors talk about items like knowing when to use NumPy or pandas and real world scenarios like removing duplicates, creating a data map and data plan, dealing with Dates in Your Data, Dealing with Missing data, parsing etc; problems which practicing data scientists encounter on a daily basis.

Contemporary topics like Text mining are also addressed in the book with enough details of topics such as working with Raw Text, Stemming and removing stop words, Bag of Words Model and Beyond, Working with n‐grams, Implementing TF‐IDF transformations, and adjacency matrix handling. This is also where you start getting a basic understanding of how machine learning algorithms work in practice.
Practical aspects of evaluating a data science problem are addressed later, with techniques defined for researching solutions, formulating a hypothesis, data preperation, feature creation, binning and discretization, leading up to vectors and matrix manipulation, and visualization with MatPlotLib. Even though the book does not discuss theano, DL4J, Torch, Caffe or TensorFlow, it still provides an introduction to key python ML library Scikit‐learn. This 400 page book also covers key topics like SVD, PCA, NMF, Recommendation systems, Clustering, Detecting Outliers, logistic Regression, Naive Bayes, Fitting a Model, bias and variance, Support Vector Machines, and Random Forest classifiers to name a few. The resources provided in the end are definitely worth subscribing to for every self-respecting data science enthusiast.

I highly recommend this book for those beginners interested in data science and also want to learn and leverage Python skills for this rapidly emerging field.

Easy book to help you start understanding Data Science

I was taking Data Mining at my University when I decided that I wanted to get a bit of help and get an edge on the subject so I was ahead of the class. This book helped explain everything and even had the output of the code to show what each code block would do. I ended up searching around on the author's website and he does have all of the source code in a zip file. Easy book to help you start understanding Data Science.

truly enlightening

Ellis Sandoz (one of only a few graduate students philosopher Eric Voegelin took on) provides an excellent discussion and analysis of Dostoevsky's "Legend of the Grand Inquisitor" from The Brothers Karamazov, perhaps one of the world's greatest novels. Sandoz first gives the historical and religious background of Dostoevsky and the Russia he knew, placing Dostoevsky's thought in the particular (and peculiar?) character of Russian Orthodox Christianity, with its roots in old Slavic cults. He then launches into an explication of the Legend, understanding it in distinctly biblical terms. His discussion of the "threeness" of the tale (he finds dozens of triplets throughout) is quite interesting. But more than an analysis of Dostoevsky, it is an insight into the nihilism of modern times. The solution to the crisis lies in returning political science to a search (zetema) for truth. "Political Apocalypse" is a step in that direction.

What a book! Great for any serious fan of Dostoevsky and his philosophy of religion and metaphysics. It puts the context on his thought and his works.
In the fairest and most detailed way, Elis Sandoz fairly and accurately examines Dostoevsky's "Legend of The Grand Inquisitor."
This is one of the best books I've read all year. I'm speechless just buy this book!

For Dostoevsky fanatics, this book is a must-read. It explores The Legend of the Grand Inquisitor in The Brothers Karamazov. It keeps Dostoevsky in the context of his times, examining his political and religious philosophy. Extremely well-written and thought provoking--good help to understanding Dostoevky's other works as well.

Our current understanding of the paintings of Manet is so heavily filtered through the lens of Impressionism that in many ways, his contributions to art history have been obscured. Called the "first modernist," his paintings marked a break with the past and paved the way for what we've come to accept as modern art in the treatment of the canvas as a flat surface. But during his time, Manet's modernist innovations were the object of ridicule. "It's flat, it isn't modeled," said Courbet of the nude in the painting Olympia. "It's like the Queen of Hearts after a bath." In Manet's Modernism, Michael Fried has set out to see Manet as his contemporaries would have seen him and to gain a more accurate reading of Manet's place in history.

Returning to the Cardinal Manet Resource: An Appreciation

Michael Fried published his magnum opus 'Manet's Modernism: or, The Face of Painting in the 1860s' in 1996, the compendium of three books, actually, that remain the most significant resource of the study of the much maligned painter Edouard Manet. In Manet's time he was essentially hidden in the rise of the more popular Impressionists, garnering criticism form his colleagues and critics alike for works that appeared to mannered, too posed, to unnaturally lighted. But fine author and historian Michael Fried introduces some new ideas about the painter that could just place him in the echelon of the first of the Modernists.

Fried 'suggests' that Manet's paintings were for the most part tableaus created in his studio from professional and non-professional models wearing costumes suggestive of the many allegories and historical events that Manet painted. That fact, in and of itself, does not venture Manet much further thatn say, Caravaggio et al, but it is the interplay between the subjects and the painter (and hence the observer) that Fried alls to our attention. The lighting of his paintings seem to have its source from the front as opposed to the back lighting or streams of side lighting usually chosen by other painters. And to make the controversy even more interesting, Fried suggests that this studio technique coupled with various observances of his models' features (eg. barefeet that suggest having worn contemporary type shoes) may - and the important word is 'may' - represent the uses of photography as the tool Manet used! Horrors! you say? But then by the time of the painting period of the 1860s that Fried is exploring, photography was well known and fairly widely used as a means of documenting history, battles, families etc. So why should an artist of Manet's importance not include this new tool in his painting paraphernalia?

It is an interesting concept and one that in today's widely used techniques among artists of not only using photographs to reference 'sittings' for later solo studio work but also to include photography in the canvases (witness Rauschenberg, etc) makes complete sense. Gone are the prejudices against photography as not being 'pure'. And it just may be that Manet, if he indeed used photographs in his painting preparation, is more important in the overall history of painting advancement than he has been regarded! History versus Criticism

It has been said that images of Edouard Manet marked the beginning of modern painting. The great art critic and art historian Michael Fried explores the work of Manet and several contemporaries.

The book opens with the republication of an earlier article by Fried in which he suggested that the sources of many of Manet's important works were in the art of earlier times and cultures and has a second chapter aimed at refuting the arguments against his thesis by other critics and historians. Fried concludes that Manet was trying to create some kind of universal art. To do so he refers to earlier pictures by artists from Rembrandt to Watteau which he maintains show the connections and derivations. In most case the similarity was usually as to the posing of certain figures in both Manet's and the earlier works. While quite interesting, I was unconvinced since there was no evidence directly from Manet of his intentions. Moreover, it seemed to me that if one looked enough through the bodies of works of the earlier artists, one would be bound to find similar poses.

In the third chapter, the author addresses many of Manet's contemporaries, including Millet, Fantin-Latour, Legros and Whistler. In this examination, Fried pays particular attention to a concern he has previously addressed, namely the opposition between absorption and theatricality. (To oversimplify, in images characterized by absorption, the subject appears not to be aware of his subjectness, while theatricality shows an awareness of the viewer.) In exploring the issue, Fried discusses the reactions of art critics of the time to the work of the artists, particularly their appraisal of the value of the images based upon their place on the absorption/theatricality continuum. The fourth chapter deals in the same way with Manet.

The fifth chapter is a strange one that deals primarily with self-portraits and the effect of the artist viewing himself in a mirror. There is a coda appended in which Fried summarizes what has gone before, and concludes that he is unable to have any final word on what Manet's goals were with respect to absorption and theatricality. There are several appendices in French and English with the comments of critics of the time and 168 pages of notes.

Fried is both a critic and historian, and this book illustrates the distinction. He is concerned about the history of the art without drawing conclusions as to the quality of the work of the artists, and other than describing technique, gives us little clue as to how to appreciate the works. Indeed, I sometimes felt that he didn't particularly care for the work of Manet and his contemporaries. For those who believe that art is a way to understand the culture and times in which the art is created this book will be interesting. On the other hand those who believe that the purpose of art is to transform our vision of the world will find less help in using Manet as an agent of transformation.

About the Author
Glenn Patterson was born in Belfast in 1961 and from 1989 to 1991 was Writer in the community for Lisburn and Craigavon. His first novel, Burning Your Own, was awarded the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature and a Betty Trask Prize. He now lives in Manchester.

Perspectives on the Troubles

Fat Lad is the second novel by Glenn Patterson and portrays the history of Drew, a twentysomething from Belfast and his family in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. It is written from a Protestant's perspective and set in 1990 in Belfast, when Drew returns to his hometown after an absence of eight years. Patterson manages to interweave personal and official history in a story that spans the period from the construction of the ill-fated Titanic to the resurrection of a city after 20 years of bombings and violence. Don't expect a definite account of the Troubles, the book does not and cannot do that, but it is a very interesting account of the impact of political violence on ordinary people and their struggle to find a working relationship with their families, past and identity. The way Patterson connects private and official history in a web of interwoven stories is reminiscent of Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children, a novel which Patterson says was very important for his perception of Northern Ireland.

A worthy addition to Patterson's fiction, if not his best

Which means that I like this novel a lot. On its own, if Patterson had not surpassed it in his later efforts The International and Number 5, it'd have merited another star. But placed beside these two works, it suffers a bit by P's compulsion to stuff it full of everything he's thought of since writing his debut, Burning Your Own, with its barely teenaged protagonist. Itching now to create a grown-up character, in Fat Lad he sets out, as the acronymical title indicates, to give us the ultimate Six County statement.
My favorite parts took place in the bookstore that sets out to resist the chainstores' assault. Any booklover will find much fascinating material here as a backdrop. The characters, while engaging, seem too verbose and the plot too cluttered to truly highlight Patterson's talents, which emerge better when focussed on smaller settings and less grand ambitions. Still, for any one wanting to learn about Belfast around the later 1980s, this novel serves as its evocation and commemoration.

“When? When is this?” Dara asked, gesturing at the room.
“It’s June 18th, miss,” Agnes said. “You really didn’t know?”
Dara closed her eyes. “The year. What year, please?”
“It’s 1908, miss,” Agnes said.
Dara opened her eyes, opened her messenger bag, and pulled out her cell phone. She pushed the button to activate the main screen. It didn’t have a signal or the time and date. The battery was at 80 percent. She looked over at Agnes, whose eyes had gone wide. Agnes leaned over in her chair, trying to get a better look at the phone. Dara tapped a few buttons to pull up the photos she had stored on her phone. Yes, they were still there. The photos of Nick, their parents, and their friends were still there. The many pictures of Jenny, with and without Dara, were there. With Agnes still gazing at her and the phone intently, Dara went to her phone’s contacts and dialed Nick’s number. Nothing.
“That still doesn’t mean I’m not dreaming,” she muttered.
“Perhaps I should make us both some tea, miss.”
Dara nodded yes, although she figured she could do with something a good deal stronger than tea. Agnes bustled out of the room.
“Oh my God,” Dara said when she was alone. Her eyes darted around the room, taking it all in, the flower-patterned curtains on the one window, the shabby wardrobe standing in the corner, the night stand, the wooden chair, a small desk, the plain iron bed frame and the bedclothes that adorned it. One part of her couldn’t believe it was true, but another part could. That part urged her to accept the truth. It will go much easier on you if you do and soon, it said.
She thought of her brother, who was probably frantic with worry wondering where she was. What would he tell their parents if he didn’t find her before they were supposed to fly out of Heathrow next week? Then there were her friends and the co-workers she actually liked. Most of all, though, there was Jenny. Jenny had been dead for over a year, so it wasn’t the fact that she wouldn’t see Jenny again that upset her. She had accepted that. No, it was the fact that she might never see the places she associated with Jenny ever again. She may never see all the little gifts Jenny had given her during their time together. In a panic, she clutched at the thin gold chain she wore around her neck. She kept her engagement ring on that chain. At least she had that. She kissed it tenderly and wept.

Engaging

The Time Slip Girl is a story of Dara, a young woman who is touring London with her brother and picking her life back up after losing her soon to be wife when she falls through time back to 1908. Agnes is a quiet woman who sticks to herself living in fear in soon after the turn of the century. Her abusive brother drops in and out of her life as he sees fit. She really has no choice in the matter if she doesn't want her closely guarded secret brought to light. On one remarkable night her life is changed forever when she finds an oddly dressed, very confused and confusing female in the basement the home she rents an apartment from. What happens to them next is not mine to tell.

This book was a good paced, well flowing, captivating book that I just could not put down. Really, I read through the night till I finished a bit after the sun rose! It was a great story even before it got to the romance and then it got better! I loved the realness of the characters, their insecurities and doubts only made them more sweet and believable. I liked how Ms. Andre took me back in time and showed me what it really would have been like, the sights and sounds and even the smells.... The hardships people experienced and the things women had to endure, the things that were commonplace then that are taken for granted today. I am so grateful to be alive now and not then!

I enjoyed Agnes' curiosities and her delight in simple things. How, even though she sometimes seems so meek she has such a strong sense of loyalty and is willing to overcome fear to do what is right and to follow her heart. I fell a bit in love with Dara. Besides being lovely, she was faced her situation head on (after freaking out a bit at first, but going back in time more than 100 years would tend to do that to a person!). She did her best to adapt to and accept the changes she found herself in. She was able to stand up to Ted and keep him from hurting her and Agnes too. She did what needed to be done and allowing herself to love Agnes made me smile and my heart grow so big!

I was thrilled with the ending, it was just right! Once again, Ms. Andre has made me a very happy reviewer!

Delightful and impressive

I loved this book. It's well-written, with great flow to it. I couldn't put it down and stayed up late to finish it. The depiction of 1908 is very realistic without going in the direction of how-did-anybody-survive-back-then that some historical novels take. I could see how it would be shocking to arrive there, but also how one could adapt and it could become home.

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I've read many lesbian romances that just aren't well written, have cardboard characters or ridiculously dramatic plots. This book is very well written (with some amazingly good descriptions), the characters spring from the page and walk around in my imagination and despite the time travel the plot feels very realistic. That would have been shocking and delightful enough. But I realized at some point that the book is a subtle and nuanced meditation on the nature of love in the context of our mortality. I'm impressed.

THE TIME SLIP GIRL is a beautifully written story of discovering new love in an unconventional way. Dara Gillard is a smart, attractive, and talented woman from 2014 who is visiting London with her brother as a way of honoring her dead fiancée, Jenny. Dara is on a tour when she falls through a time slip to 1908 Edwardian London. She meets Agnes Cartwright, who lives in the house Dara was touring in 2014, along with Mrs. Newton and her children. While Dara is trying to find her way through her new life in 1908, she’s also fighting her feelings for Agnes. However, during all this Dara is unaware Agnes feels the same way about her. The setting is very realistic, the characters are dynamic, and the emotions are rich – I was truly transported. I enjoyed the fact the sex scenes were tasteful and not overly graphic which, to me, fit the tone of the novel perfectly. THE TIME SLIP GIRL is a wonderful novel which I definitely recommend!
