A quick way to get up to speed.

I bought this book because I hadn't used my 35mm camera since some photography classes in high school, and wanted to refresh myself with the basics. The book is quick and to the point, not mincing any words or going into much detail in any of the topics. It covers the basics of camera operation, illustrating the concepts of depth of field and shutter speed (and it's balance with aperture) quickly but clearly, using photographs to demonstrate them all. You can probably sit down and read the book in a half hour or so, but you'll walk away understanding what you need to in order to start experimenting and learning through experience.
If you've done any 35mm photography before, this isn't the book for you, it will be much too basic and there aren't any great insights to be learned from it. It is aimed squarely at beginners and shines as a quick tutorial.
I once read that photography is more about getting out and doing it than having 'talent' or even 'technical skills', I'd agree, and would recommend this book as the shortest route to get shooting.

great for beginners

I teach basic and color photography. One of my students let me borrow her copy of the original(1989). One problem in explaining aperture, shutter speed, and depth-of-field is that photos would really help. This book does that, as well as having photos that address loading the film, types of lenses, light, and use of flash. Yes, there are people out there that don't know how to load film. Although modern cameras may have electronic gizmos to deal with aperture and shutter speed, this book helps the understanding of how everything works, as all cameras do the same thing.

Good if serious about getting into photography and want a simple, basic book.

I had this book years ago and thought at the time it was a great book. Someone in my family, alas, mistakenly donated a box of my goodies to goodwill ... and it seems this book went with it. I've missed it, but now I have a copy again :)
Okay, some have criticised this book, and I think perhaps been a little harsh. This book is a BASIC photography book. It's NOT exhaustive. But it is also intended for "beginning PHOTOGRAPHERS." It's not for "beginning snaps-shot-wannabes." So it's a basic book for people who aspire to seriously get into photography and who need to understand aperture, shutter speed, focal length, ISO. I didn't say "know what they are." To understand what those parameters do, how they affect the picture, and most importantly then, how to USE those settings to get just the rendition of a scene they want is the goal of a photographer. $3000 digital setup or $10 thrift shop film camera from 40 y ago, the basics are still the same ... if you are new to photography AND can get over the hype of modern gadgets, you can get something out of this book.
I don't really need this book for me - I started doing manual 35mm photography nearly 30y ago, was a high school newspaper photographer then college yearbook photo editor, and then did freelance for a while on the side. I've never thought I was that great at the artistic side, but I was the guy who folks came to for tricky shots that required complex exposure and to fix images in the darkroom when others couldn't get their shot to come out ... I was the 'technical' guru who could make the shot or print come out exactly like someone wanted. ... so I know my way around a camera.
I bought this book because there are now others in my life (kids, spouse) interested in photography and this is a great book to learn from. No, it's not a first and ONLY book to learn photography. Don't buy it for that. Concepts are discussed briefly but not in enough detail for you to completely understand. However, it has great examples and clear explanations with some technical terms without going overboard. It's a great companion to one of the more "exhaustive" how-to photo books out there - when the exhaustive book is too dense, turn here and all those swirling details might just make sense. It is older (I got my first copy in the late 1980's and it was used!) - it was written when photography was heavily a manual endeavour. BUT if you want to really take control of your pictures, you need to understand the controls and their resultant effects. When this book was written, digital was not on photographers' minds. The basic principles, though, if you are using a dSLR camera, are similar to film, so this book is still of value. (well, the parts on actual film etc. aren't but for those of you too young to have played with film it is still probably an interesting dive into history)
For what it attempts to be, if you can get a used copy for a FEW BUCKS like I did, I think this book is great. I'm sure others differ, though. I would not pay full/retail price though - if it was updated sure, but the book I got with publication date of 2001 still looks like the one I had in 1990 did! -1 star cause, c'mon, if you publish it in 2001, it should look at least contemporary for the 1990s! It looks like it's from the late 1970s/early 1980s!
