Project Mercury was America's entry into the manned spaceflight program. When the program began in 1958, the Soviet Union was far ahead of the US in the race for supremacy in space. With immense effort, and in record time, NASA, the newly created spaceflight organization, developed a space transport system with orbital capsule and booster rockets. They used it to send Alan Shepard on a first suborbital "jump" into space in May 1961, and in February 1962 to make John Glenn the first American astronaut to orbit the earth. Nevertheless, the Americans were beaten by the Soviets in the race to put the first man into space. Project Mercury was, however, the foundation for NASA's later success in the race to the moon. All Project Mercury missions are discussed, including details on all craft and the astronauts involved. Superb color, archival images, cutaways and plans are also included.

Great book about early spaceflight, unfortunately confusing when dealing with units.

Fascinating book on the history of early spaceflight. This is a "just the facts, ma'am" type of book with fairly little discussion of the personalities involved; I would have been interested in the author's (and contemporaries) comments on such things as the Grissom and Carpenter flights and the various problems and issues that arose from them. Good technical descriptions of the spacecraft, it's systems and the various boosters that were used with Mercury including Little Joe (which I have never seen much information on).
My biggest criticism of the book is confusion regarding units - in aviation, it's normally Feet (Altitude), Nautical Miles (Distance), Degrees Fahrenheit and Pounds/in^2 (PSI). In this book, there was a mix of units between the traditional, MKS and non-standard which I found distracting and had to convert to so that I could better understand what was being conveyed.

Excellent Book. Great illustrations and Photographs.

Excellent book. Very good illustrations and photographs. Lots of detail that would perhaps annoy a young reader, but if you want to know what happened throughout the Mercury program then this is the book for you. One small error that escaped editing occurs only once in the book Alan Shepard was asked what call sign he wanted to use "Friendship 7". Reality is that it was "Freedom 7". Throughout the rest of the book it is correct.
